Now - Appomattox Court House, Virginia
The date, April 9, 1865. The place, Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
The Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Lee, would surrender
to the Army of the Potomac, commanded by General Grant. It was the beginning
of the end to the American Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in American
history, with estimates as high as 620,000 deaths.
The following day, along this fence line, between lines of Union soldiers
standing in reverence, over 25,000 Confederate soldiers would march to
their designated points, to stack their arms and surrender their cherished
battle-flags.
